Just because most offline auction houses have specialist sales of coins, stamps, sporting goods, books and prints, guns, clocks and vintage telephones, doesn’t always mean they stop selling those items between specialist sales. That’s what I thought, I imagined most auction companies sold general items at weekly events, and reserved all specialist items for forthcoming specialist sales. Not so and this assumption can mean you miss many, more profitable specialist goods selling at interim auctions.

The really good news is:

* Many bidders at specialist sales are of the same opinion about interim auctions and will deliberately avoid those ‘other’ sales. Which means less competition for those who do turn up to bid.

* Interim sales are often poorly advertised, meaning even less interest from specialist dealers and collectors. Because they’re poorly advertised you should regularly telephone or check web sites for details of interim sale dates and contents.

Following on from the last tip, be aware that most offline auction companies add last minute lots to their sales and frequently lots are withdrawn from sale, sometimes days before the event leaving insufficient time to amend catalogues and web sites. So you might find items offered that few people know about which sell way below value - if, that is, you phone or visit on the day of the sale to check last minute changes.

You really can offer the exact same product line as hundreds of other eBay sellers and make yours the products people rush to buy. The trick is to offer a free gift that fulfils one or both of the following requirements:

* The bonus item is valuable in its own right, such as a CD showing how to improve their golf swing for people who’ve just purchased golf balls or clubs, a £5 discount voucher redeemable at some well known Off License chain for buyers of Honeymoon holidays in some exotic location, a handful of sumptuous Belgian chocolates to accompany …. well, just about anything really!

* The bonus item is not available elsewhere, such as: an eBook you wrote or derived from the public domain (make a few changes to public domain works and the copyright is entirely yours), a discount voucher for other of your items selling on or outside of eBay, or a bracelet or fridge magnet reflecting an item just purchased.
